Preliminary Exercise 2: Barthes’ Theory Semiotic Analysis of The Hunger Games Catching Fire Table 2

In this assignment we took the concept from preliminary exercise 1 and use it it analyze the hunger games clip that we watched as a class and create a poster board about it in our groups. The key concept of this lesson was semiotics, which is study  of  topic and what they mean to an audience/group of people.  I also took some of the keys concepts from the first preliminary exercise and combined it with the shot from the hunger games. I also listed the denotative and connotative signs and definitions of the clips and shots from the film . The images in the diagram are some of the major events that took place in the film and played a huge part in building the plot and helped to build the tension in the film. THes clips also show case many different camera shot and Angles. From this assignment I learned that the semiotic theory is foundation of many tings when it comes to Film and Media but it is also not limited to these thing and can be applied to different elements and topics.

Preliminary Exercise 1: Barthes’ Theory of Denotative and Connotative Signs

The objective key concept of this lesson is semiotics. Semiotics is the study of signs and symbols and there uses or interpretation. Roland Barthes  played a huge part in the semiotic analysis. Roland Barthes was a French essayist, social and literary critic, philosopher, theorist, and semiotician. Roland Barthes' theory was anything part of a culture can be a sign that sends a specific message. An example of this is denotations and connotations. The definition of denotation is literal definitions and symbols, while connotations are the meanings associated with the image/symbols. An example of connotations is a black dress it represents death, horror, and fright. A denotative example of a black dress is a Lon ramen worn on the body in the color black.

The objective of the activity and the process of the task is to understand the concept of semiotics by choosing 3 out of 6 pictures, a cat, rose, broken shoes, an eagle, a tree, and a car, and to give their denotative and connotative means. As well as its definitions, and connotative and denotative meaning.Only two students were allowed to work on the document/assignment being me and Brooke N. In this exercise I learned that practically anything can have a denotative and connotative meaning, how they apply in the real world and how we use them with out even knowing.

Welcome to my Media Studies blog!

Hi my name is Alisha and in my opinion the importance of studying media studies is the study of mass communication and encourages media literacy it with the content, history, and effects of various media; in particular, the mass media. An example of this is Tik Tok , Tik Tok is used to to help people communicate around the world, it teaches you fun facts and it has content for everyone and appeals to different age groups. I get access to my favorite media product through the app. I consume this media product because it keep me entertained and has multiple genres. This media product is not only engaging to my age group but to every other age group because you can customize your feed and what you view/see.  A few interesting facts about media studies are it teaches you different camera shots, it teaches you how to edit and how direct/produce a movie/film.

The type of media product I will be creating is a media product that I will be crating is a opening for a horror film. This horror film will be about a girl who got lost in the woods. She got lost looking for her friends house so they could complete a group assignment then got to the mall. This happened in the early 90's in the middle of the woods. The target audience of this is teenager who have an interest in horror films. The purpose of this is to entertain / scare the audience. The main theme of this is horror and gore. To complete this film I need to learn how to take different camera shots, how to edit and how direct/produce a movie/film.MY film should be ready by the end of December / beginning of January.

Three of the important strategic and skills that I will need to learn are how to take different camera shots, it  how to edit and how direct/produce a movie/film. Learning how to edit will help me attain a good score on my component 1 exam by helping me fix any flaws, combining my clips and make sure my film is presentable. Learning how to take different camera shot will make sure that the angle / shot of the camera fits the mood/scence and that nothing will be off with filming. Learing how to direct/produce will help me to make sure that everything that I listed above goes well together and that everything is going well on  and everyone is doing their job
