Preliminary Exercise: Camera Shot size

For this assignment We were required to take our own images and submit them into a PowerPoint for this portion of a class project. The subject of this element of the assignment is shot size. Each slide has an image of the assigned shot with information on the photo's size, genre, tone, and purpose. Together with four other people, I worked on this project. This PowerPoint layout is consistent with the earlier storyboards.

The goal of this task was to improve our capacity for capturing images that adhere to the specifications of the given picture. We had to write a storyboard and explain what the shot definition covered.

Showing what is in the frame is how shot sizes are defined. I think my group and I executed our shot-size shots well and appropriately.

I gained a lot by doing this task. I can say this because I've had experience working with others to create shots and scenes in a production that are consistent with the plot. I had to look into various shot sizes, consider how I wanted it to turn out, and then talk with my teammates to come up with a plan of action that benefits the team and advances our common goal. This part of the assignment was incredibly educational.

(Preliminary Exercise) Introduction to Camerawork Warm-Up Exercise 1

Camerawork is  the way in which cameras are used to film/ broadcast movies and films.Three reasons why camera work is significant in filming a movie is that it adds a sense of forward momentum, it can change your viewers perspective on a scene, and it creates a vibe and add peace and engird to the film. Cinematography is the art and or motion of pictures, the person who is responsible for cinematography on set is the director of photography. Some award wining photography directors are Steven Soderbergh whom played a huge part in developing the the movie KIMI and Roger Deakins who helped to create Sicario.

The two main key concepts that we learned are camera shots and camera angles. Camera shots are the specific location at which the movie camera or video camera is placed to take a shot. A Camera angle is a continuous view through a single camera without interruption. We were introduced to the topic by two educational video that showed us the shots and we had to draw a picture them and take notes on it. The information that I document was easier ways for me to memorize the angle and shot names which are an establishing shot, a Master shot, a Wide shot, a Full shot, aMedium shot, A cowboy shot, A medium close up, a close up, and and extreme close up. The angles that we were introduced to are Low angle, High angle, Dutch angle, a overhead shot, Eye level, Hip level, Knee level, and ground level. The information that I found most interesting was how the angles can change the perspective an d how you see a scene.Three adjectives that I would utilize to describe the concepts are unique, interesting, and entertaining. Some jobs that are associated with camerawork are the Director, the Producer, the Executive Producer,he Principal Cast.,the Casting Director,  the AD Department, the Art Department, the Camera Department.

Introduction to storyboarding: Shot sizes, Camera angles, Camera framing and Composition Storyboards ( Pt 5)

In the pervious blog about Camera framing and Camera  composition went into grave detail about what we learned about  camera Framing but lets talk about camera composition. Camera composition is basically how a film maker or producer arranges the visual effects or elements within the frame.Similar to Camera framing, Camera composition can vary for example rule of thirds which is the subject of the image is placed at the intersection of these dividing lines, or along one of them directly, in the rule of thirds composition. Another composition shot is the symmetry balance shot, in which both sides of the frame are balanced against one another. There are numerous other compositions but these are the two main composition shot. Composition shots are important to the film industry because it helps to tell the story behind an image or scene, it also grabs the attention of the viewer. This lesson was very important because it will play a huge part in helping us to prepare for the exam and to help us with our film intro at the benign of the year.

This is an example of a rule of the thirds shot from "Ratatouille" produced by Disney Pixar.

This is an example of a symmetric balance shot from ''The Shinning'' produced by Warner Bros Pictures.

Introduction to storyboarding: Shot sizes, Camera angles, Camera framing and Composition Storyboards ( Pt 4)

For this Preliminary exercise we learned about Camera framing and Camera Composition. First let's talk about Camera Framing. The liberal definition of camera framing is the process of composing a picture, while the literal definition is the placement or position of the subject in the frame. Camera Framing is a technique  that filmmakers and producers use to direct the grasp the attention of the viewer. A camera framing is also a way to describe the positioning and angle of the camera to create specific effects. For this assignment we were told to a power point capturing the different types of frames and shots, such as the single shot which is when when one person is in the frame, two shot is similar to the single shot but with 2 subject, while crowd shot is when there is 5 or more subjects the frame. Camera Framing is used in a wide variety of movies and it is very important because its used to show the different point of views, the way the actor is positioned, set designed, props stunts and more. All these things play a huge roll in camera framing and filming the film. So it is very important to learn these things types of thing/ information when it comes to film, especially if you want to be a person who is interested in working in the film industry. Some example of camera framing can be found below.

This is an example of a single shot from the movie "The harder they fall" produced by Netflix

This is an example of an over the shoulder shot from "The Joker" movie produced by D.C.

Introduction to storyboarding: Shot sizes, Camera angles, Camera framing and Composition Storyboards (Pt 3)

In this preliminary excersise I worked in groups of 4. We decided on a plot then each of us wrote the camera composition, the description of the image and drew the actual image. Camera composition really helps add tone to the shot along with dimension. Storyboarding is a very important and fun way to plan out a production. It also helps but the film into perspective.

In this week's photo assignment we are looking at the rule of thirds, the symmetry balnce shot, and the asymmetry balance shot where both sides of the frame are balanced against each other. The Asymmetry Balance Shot is the one where all elements in the photo are evenly distributed. It is also the shot where the subject of the image is placed at the intersection of two lines, or along the line its self.

Introduction to storyboarding: Shot sizes, Camera angles, Camera framing and Composition Storyboards ( Pt 2.)

For this preliminary excerse we had to get creative and it cause us to think. We created a storyboard for the camera framing for the initial excursion. The first picture we drew was the single shot, which is when there is just one person in the frame, followed by the two shot, which has two people in the frame, and finally the three shot, which has three individuals in the frame. Anything over five is a crowd shot, which was the following shot, and after the crowd shot it's the shoulder shot, which is when the shot is a camera angle used in cinema and television. A 4 shot is four to a frame, a 5 shot is five to a frame, and at this point it needs to end.

The last illustration depicts a point of view shot, which is when the camera is positioned above the subject's back, shoulders, and head. A point of view shot is a brief scene from a movie that reveals what a character is looking at. These camera framing angles are employed in numerous films and television programs to add effects.

Introduction to storyboarding: Shot sizes, Camera angles, Camera framing and Composition Storyboards ( Pt 2)

In preliminary exercise we were told to create a story board  about camera angles and shot sizes. This assignment was created to see our knowledge on the key concepts of story boarding and camera angles. In this assignment I learned the impact camera angles and shot sizes has on a movie. For example Insert shots, knee shots and much more. In this assignment we were also told to draw images that we can recreated because we will be taking them in a future assignment. For this assignment I worked with two other students, we came up camera shot that we are  able to complete with the materials and the environment we were in. We each worked on for different camera shots and angles.

I heard a lot from this assignment like the smallest detail in a movie such as the shot size or camera angle can have a huge effect on the outcome. This assignment also proved that the positioning in frame or shot has a huge effect on the product.
